SPRINGFIELD- It's a fact of life as a police officer, you never know what the next assignment will bring. For a handful of Springfield officers, a December disturbance turned into a life saving mission.
The officers received meritorious service awards at the police department on Monday. Chief Lynn Rowe says these awards are not given out that often, but when they are, they're well deserved.
The four responded to a suicide attempt in Springfield back in December. But, when they were on the scene, they found a woman was inside with the man, fighting over the gun. With time against them, and knowing the woman was in danger, Corporal Rob Schroeder and Officers Jason Kitta, Ethan Ramsey and Cody Williams quickly formed an entry team. The officers tazed the suicide suspect, got the gun, and helped the woman escape the situation unharmed.
Corporal Schroeder actually nominated the three officers for this award. He's not sure who nominated him. Along with a certificate, the officers all received pins they'll place above their nametag on their uniform.
