After three days and 54-holes, young golfers from Kansas and California beat out 97 other competitors to win the boys and girls divisions of the Bass Pro/ Payne Stewart Jr. Championship at Rivercut.
Sponsored by the American Junior Golf Association, which boasts over 5,000 members nationwide including Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson among its famous alumni, the local event featured golfers ages 12-18 from 20 states and Canada.
On the girls side, Gabriella Then of Rancho Cucamonga, California came from three strokes off the pace on the final day as her round of 69 gave her a 2-stroke victory. Then can be seen in the accompanying video (in the yellow shirt) making a nice putt on the 9th hole.
The boys side saw a trio of players go into a playoff that extended almost until sundown. Fletcher Johnson of Belden, Mississippi, Jeffrey Lee of Overland Park, Kansas, and second round co-leader Reid Holly of Madision, Wisconsin all went to the sudden death playoff. Holly was finally eliminated on the third extra hole. And on the 4th playoff hole, the par 3 17th, Lee made a great approach shot onto the green and made a short birdie putt to earn his first AJGA victory. His previous best finish had been 31st. The accompanying video also shows his winning putt and the awards presentation.
