SPRINGFIELD -- The mother of a 15-year-old boy who says he was sexually abused by a 26-year-old man was shocked when she found out about it.

"I was totally devastated. It was the middle of the night at 3 o'clock in the morning,” said the mother, who wishes to remain anonymous to protect her son.

It was in those early morning hours that the mother learned the man whom she trusted with her son would soon face criminal charges. The man is Matthew O'Dell, who is charged with statutory sodomy and enticement of a child.

"I met him. I checked him out his background. I talked to him," the mother said.

O'Dell was a staff member at YMCA's Camp Wakonda, a volunteer at Pershing Middle School for a short time and a disk jockey at radio station KTTS. The mother said her son starting chatting with him online after other friends met him on Myspace. A detective's probable cause statement, which is the basis of the charge against him, says the teen thought he was talking to a teenage girl named Hannah.

"Hannah doesn't exist. There is no Hannah," the mother said on Tuesday, four days after O'Dell was fired from Camp Wakonda, arrested and charged. He's also fired from the radio station.

According to the detective, O'Dell posed as Hannah online and lured the young boy to the camp where he was to meet the girl. The boy's mom said, before she let her son go to the camp, she met with O'Dell, who claimed to be Hannah's cousin.

"I knew there would be supervision. I knew there would be staff at the YMCA camp," said the mother.

When her son showed up, according to the probable cause statement, O'Dell said Hannah couldn't make it to camp that night. Her son spent the night at the camp in O'Dell's room but nothing happened.

O'Dell then asked the teenager to go to the camp again last Thursday night. After he picked him up, the boy said, O'Dell said he had to stay in Springfield because he was going to be on a radio show. That's when they went to a hotel room, where the boy said O'Dell made sexual advances.

The teen eventually escaped. His mother is proud of her son for going to authorities.

“He is the hero. In my opinion, he's the hero of the story," she said.

She thinks there are other victims and wants to warn parents to be vigilant, especially if their kids are talking to strangers online.

"I don't think there's anything parents can do to prevent this. But what parents have to do is they have to talk to their children," she said.

Detectives are interviewing more potential victims, although their investigation could take some time because O'Dell had a lot of access to children. The Child Advocacy Center is helping with the investigation.
