The Arkansas Department of Human Services says more than 56,000 people have told the state they want to sign up for coverage under a recently approved plan to use federal Medicaid funds to purchase private health insurance.
The department said Tuesday that from Oct. 1 through Oct. 12, the agency received more than 1,500 online applications and more than 1,100 phone and paper applications.
That's in addition to more than 53,600 current department clients who have already been deemed eligible and returned letters saying they wanted coverage.
The federal government approved Arkansas' so-called "private option" last month as an alternative to the Medicaid expansion under the federal health care law. About 250,000 people are expected to be covered under the plan.
