SPRINGFIELD -- A federal grand jury indicted a former YMCA camp worker and school volunteer for possession of child pornography. The indictment adds to the legal troubles of Matthew O’Dell, who was charged this summer with sexually abusing a 15-year-old boy at a motel in Greene County.
The mother of one of the 15-year-old boy spoke to KY3 News. She says the new federal charge is both satisfying and heartbreaking. To see that interview, watch the video with this report. O’Dell was charged on July 31 with second-degree statutory sodomy. He is a former volunteer at Pershing Middle School in Springfield and a former employee of Camp Wakonda near Halltown but the charge does not involve a camper or a student at that school. A preliminary hearing on that charge is scheduled for Oct. 7 in Greene County associate circuit court. That charge carries a maximum seven-year prison sentence. The federal grand jury issued the child porn indictment on Sept. 9 but it wasn’t unsealed until Tuesday when O’Dell appeared before a federal magistrate. If O’Dell is convicted in U.S. District Court, he could get a prison sentence as long as 10 years with no chance of parole. After O’Dell was charged in Greene County, Springfield police got about 250 calls with tips about other possible sexual abuse cases. Law agencies in Dallas and Lawrence counties also said they were investigating O’Dell. Camp Wakonda is in Lawrence County. Prosecutors in those counties have not charged O’Dell with anything.
