WEST PLAINS, Mo. -- A 30-year-old woman from Lawrence, Kan., is accused of killing her ex-boyfriend at his home near Trask by shooting him and then setting fire to his home on Tuesday. Annette Cross is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree arson and armed criminal action.
The fire at the home in the rural community just west of Mountain View started about 6 a.m. Tuesday. By the time firefighters arrived, the home on County Road 2650 was fully engulfed in flames. After the fire was out, they found the body of Andrew Day, although it was so badly burned that investigators said they couldn't tell if it belonged to a man or a woman. Day's relatives suspected the body belonged to him, however. Shortly after the fire, the Howell County Sheriff's Department broadcast that it was looking for two people in a car seen near Day's home. Family members told a reporter that they suspected Cross, who also goes by Annette Sanford, was responsible for the fire. A probable cause statement by a Howell County Sheriff's Department detective that is the basis for the charges says Cross "had made statements of killing her ex-boyfriend." Law officers arrested Cross in Lawrence and questioned her. The probable cause statement says Cross admitted she drove to Day's home with another person and a gun. "She further stated that she and the other person then confronted Andrew Day with the gun and he was shot four times (twice in the head and twice in the chest). Day thereafter fell onto the bed where Cross believed he was still alive," the PC statement says. "Cross thereafter stated that she and the other individual lit a phone book on fire after placing it near the couch and left Day bleeding in the house." The PC statement does not identify the person who was with Cross. Online court records as of noon didn't show another person charged on Wednesday with murder in Howell County. A Howell County judge set Cross's bond at $1 million. No information was available about whether she would waive extradition from Kansas to Missouri. Most Popular
