SPRINGFIELD -- Doors opened Thursday for a big fall consignment sale. Organizers say the economy is making more smart spenders and sellers. They're also seeing new charities getting in on the exchange, swapping service for donations to help needy families.

Shoppers were scrambling to grab the best bargains on Thursday. Among them was Jocelyn Littlemoon, 20, a brand new mom who knows how to stretch her dollar.

"I'm a single mom. I haven't worked the last seven weeks and, since babies grow so fast, it's pointless to buy new things,” said Littlemoon. “It gets tough at times. I don't really have much family support,” she said.

Mentors are volunteering at the event. In exchange, the organization behind the sale -- Just Between Friends -- will donate goods to the charity.

"We are going to get baby clothes and, hopefully, toys if any are left, and safety items for our young moms,” said Salina Bollinger, program coordinator of the Missouri Mentoring Partnership in Springfield.

Families can find racks of warm winter coats and caps, tables of toys, and everything from cribs and car seats to bassinettes and baby strollers.

This event keeps breaking records and getting bigger every year. This year, shoppers will see tens of thousands more items up for sale. The warehouse is so packed, they even made a room just for bedding, and another for books.

Baby bottles were on Littlemoon’s shopping list for sweet little Aiden, just 7 weeks old. She’s ever grateful for $100 that JBF donated to her to help buy all of the baby essentials, which makes life a lot easier as a new parent.

"Even though people had mentioned it's hard, you don't realize it until you do it,” she said.

The consignment sale runs through Saturday at Remington's on Republic Road, just east of Kansas Expressway. Saturday is half price day. Hours are 9-6 on Thursday and Friday and 9-3 on Saturday.
