SPRINGFIELD -- Kimberly Armstrong, 15, known to her family as Kimmie, was still in critical condition at a hospital on Thursday. She was injured in an accident early Tuesday morning on her walk to school.

"In speaking with her father this morning, her condition has not improved. If anything, it has worsened since the actual accident," attorney Ann Littell Mills, a spokeswoman for the Armstrong family, said on Thursday.

Kimmie's family says it was her normal routine to walk to school early, arriving about 7 for a study group. Mo<"Kimmie is in the A+ program. Her family is obviously very proud of her. She is a very gifted student. She wants to go to medical school to become a doctor. She's involved in tutoring elementary school students with French, and that's been one of her great joys this past year," said Mills.

Kimmie's walk to school is just under three miles. She may have been wearing an iPod to help pass the time.

"That was her habit, to wear an iPod, but she was very safety conscious and would only wear one ear bud at a time," MIlls said.

As her family holds onto hope, they hope something can prevent this sort of tragedy from happening again.

"They are concerned about the bussing issue, and the distance from their home to the school was a little bit less than three miles, and that there have been so many incidents with students being struck on their way to school or from school. They really want this to be an awareness issue, and perhaps something more can be done to protect students," said Mills.

Kimberly is in a medically induced coma because of the swelling in her brain. She will turn 16 on Oct. 2. Springfield police say the accident investigation and report is not yet complete.
