CASSVILLE, Mo. -- A man from Seligman is in the Barry County jail after law officers said he tried to hit a state trooper who was trying to end a chase on Monday morning. Floyd Williams, 49, is charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer.

The Barry County Sheriff's Department says the chase started about 8:22 a.m. when a detective tried to stopped Williams' pickup, which has no license plate. The detective was investigating a reported stalking, and was told the stalker was in the pickup.

The pickup sped away, went down several county roads, and avoided roadblocks set up by deputies and state troopers. On Farm Road 1050, the sheriff's department says, two troopers were trying to lay down tack strips to punction the pickup's tires. It was there, troopers say, Williams tried to run over Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. John Lueckenhoff. As Williams nearly struck Lueckenhoff's car, the trooper fired at the pickup.

The chase continued into Arkansas. Williams doubled back into Missouri, where he encountered a roadblock on Mill Hill Road that was set up by Sheriff Mick Epperly and two detectives. At that point, Williams stopped and was arrested.

If convicted of assaulting a law enforcement officer, Williams could face a prison sentence of 10 to 30 years (life) in prison. He has previous convictions for driving while intoxicated, careless and imprudent driving, and marijuana possession. On Monday, a Barry County judge put him on three years of probation, with a suspended prison sentence, for two cases for driving with a suspended license.
