MARSHFIELD, Mo -- The calming hum of the alpaca filled the air in Marshfield over the weekend. National Alpaca Farm Days was a chance for locals to meet the White River alpacas. Folks could also buy some crafts and clothing accessories made from the alpaca's hypo-allergenic fiber.

These long-necked animals are known as gentle, inquisitive, intelligent and observant. They're also environmentally friendly, mowing grass for food instead of pulling it up by the root.

"They're very green," said Stacy Heydt, owner of White River Alpaca. "They come from the Andes, where food is scarce, so they have to protect their environment."
