SPRINGFIELD -- A man has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon after a brawl outside Remmington's Downtown on Saturday night. It's the only charge, as of Monday afternoon, as a result of a chaotic scene that involved hundreds of people and dozens of law enforcement officers. Police said a fight started inside Remmington's, 201 S. Campbell Ave., and involved between 30 and 40 people before it pushed outside onto the street. "The owner indicated, at one point, it probably started out that about 40 percent of the club was involved in some sort of fight inside, and then it escalated to the point where almost everyone was in a fight inside the bar and it just spilled onto Campbell," said Springfield Police Lt. Kirk Manlove. Outside, police estimate that it took 49 police and Greene County sheriff's deputies to contain and defuse fights involving around 600 people. It took an hour to break it all up but just one arrest was made. Police said Frank Grant Jr., 22, reached into his car, grabbed a gun, concealed it in his waistband and began approaching the crowd. Two officers saw him take the gun from his car and arrested him. On Monday, Grant was charged with an unlawful use of a weapon and remained in the Greene County Jail. One of the arresting officers said the man from Bolivar, who was in the bar when the fight started, said he didn't plan to use the gun but "only wanted to get his friends away from the situation. He stated the reason for having the gun was he was unsure what the other parties involved had as far as weapons." A spokesman with Missouri State University confirms that one of its fraternities, Kappa Alpha Psi, had rented Remmington's for an event on Saturday night. Police arrested no students, however. The university said it was still working to figure out what other groups were attending the event. Kappa Alpha Psi president Tyrell Brown did not return a reporter's phone call or an e-mail message requesting a comment. A worker with Remmington's, reached by phone, said the event venue sustained some damage but that the incident was being "overblown." He declined an interview. Manlove said there's unlikely to be more arrests. He said the priority on Saturday night was safety. "You've got fights breaking out right and left and, by the time we would go over and get one separated, we'd be dealing with another fight," said Manlove. "We can't tie up a lot of people in making arrests when we don't necessarily have a victim per se." Follow Dave Catanese on TWITTER HERE. Most Viewed
