As you look around the St. Louis Cardinals clubhouse these days, you'll notice that 10 of the 25 players on the roster at season's end once played in Springfield. That's not counting rehab assignments by players like Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainright, two Cy Young award candidates who fans had the chance to see in person at Hammons Field.
The group includes outfielders Rick Ankiel and Colby Rasmus, infielders Tyler Greene and Brendan Ryan, catcher Matt Pagnozzi, and pitchers Mitchell Boggs, Josh Kinney, Kyle McClellan, Blake Hawksworth and Jason Motte. "It's just a little bigger than Springfield," Motte said. "It's just a little more magnified." Then there's Colby Rasmus, a valuable contributor with solid defense in center field as well as three game-winning hits and two walk-off homers. No former Springfieldian has had a greater impact in St. Louis than shortstop Brendan Ryan, the first position player to make it up Interstate 44 to the big show. Ryan is batting .292, fourth highest on the team, and defensively he's earning rave reviews as one of the best in the majors. "He's played great shortstop here," said Tony La Russa, the St. Louis Cardinals skipper. "The more I've wanted the ball the more the balls seem to find me," said Ryan. "And the more I've been able to make plays." And, hopefully, he'll be making quite a few more as the former Springfield Cardinals continue to contribute in the post-season.
