SPRINGFIELD -- Melissa Hedges is the C.A.R.E. employee devoted to nursing an abused dog, Dover, back to health. Hikers found Dover and another dog lying under a James River Expressway overpass in southwest Springfield.

At the same location, another dog, a pit bull terrier, was dead from compressions to his skull. Dover suffered serious injuries.

"It's horrific. He shattered his leg, had cuts on his face and on his chest and stuff like that," said Hedges.

It was originally thought the dogs were thrown from the overpass, but the veterinarian who examined the dogs told detectives the injuries are not consistent with a 90-foot drop.

"If that had been the case, the injuries would have been much more severe and very apparent," said Greene County Sheriff's Dept. Capt. Randy Gibson.

Detectives said it appears someone severely beat the two dogs and left them for dead.

"I can't understand why anyone would do that," said Hedges.

It's a case of cruelty beyond belief, and now people are determined to find whoever is responsible. The Humane Society of the United States along with C.A.R.E. and several other private donors are offering a collective $5,500 reward.

"And if they're going to do it to a dog, who knows what they're going to do to a person or a kid or something like that, so we're not only doing it for him we're doing it for the safety of other people," said Hedges.

Meanwhile, Dover is getting stronger everyday, basking in the company of those who love him.

"He's such a good boy too. You think maybe they would be aggressive after they come out of that and something traumatic happens to him but he's just the sweetest boy. He loves everybody," said Hedges.

If you have any information about what happened to these dogs you can call C.A.R.E. at (417) 496-9553.
