LEBANON, Mo -- Pfc. Stephen Marcum from Lebanon was seriously injured by an improvised explosive device Friday near the city of Kandahar. After being wounded, Marcum was on his way to a hospital in Germany, but that plan had to be aborted so doctors could perform emergency surgery on him.

Although the military couldn't confirm the extent of his injuries, Marcum's family says he is on a respirator and has leg, arm, face and head wounds. His family received the news on Friday. Now they are praying and waiting.

"They say he's unconcious and he doesn't really know what's going on but I know he's in God's hands," PFC Marcum's grandmother, Cora Marcum said.

KY3 News received word on Saturday evening Marcum did make it through surgery. Once he's stabilized, he will be taken to a German hospital and eventually to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C.

A family friend has set up a fund so Marcum's wife can see him when he's stateside. Contributions can be made at any US Bank in Pfc. Stephen Marcum's name.
