the doors reopen at Phelps County R-3 Schools in Edgar Springs, Crocker schools and Delaware Elementary in Springfield. Those schools were closed last week because of high numbers of students with influenza. Delaware School had 30 percent of its students out sick with the flu on Tuesday.
It's rare that schools shut down for anything other than weather. Administrators felt it was the right thing to do to prevent any more students from becoming sick. While Delaware was out, custodians spent the rest of the week scrubbing the building from top to bottom and sanitizing surfaces to make sure the bug doesn't spread. The video has an interview with the director of Health Services for the Springfield School District. Jean Grabeel said the district is taking measures to prevent flu outbreaks. The district will offer flu shots to students and continue educating them on how to prevent the spread of germs. Message from Springfield School District on Monday afternoon: A determination has not yet been made about whether days missed due to influenza-related school closures will have to be made up. The Springfield School District is working with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to determine the required course of action. Parents and staff will be notified as soon as a decision is made regarding possible make-up days. However, it is a decision that might not be made until it is possible to discern the full impact that flu-related cancellations might have this winter on schools throughout Missouri.
