SPRINGFIELD -- The Missouri State University basketball Bears only started formal practices on Oct. 17 but three new freshmen are already showing that they can be early contributors. They include 6-foot-5, 205 pound forward Keith Jones, who averaged 24 points for Miller Career Academy in St. Louis; 6-foot-4, 190-pound forward Keith Pickens, who averaged 15 points at Oakville High School in St. Louis; and 6-foot-6, 225 pound forward Michael Porter, who averaged 19 points at Sikeston, and who second year Bears head coach Cuonzo Martin says could make the most immediate impact.

"Personally, for me, it's been hard because I'm a freshman," Porter said. "It's quite a transition going from high school to college but I'm getting used to it as each day goes on."

"I think, for what Mike does, he'd be more ready just from the standpoint of rebounding, playing defense, and doing the little things," said Martin, "but all of them will have the opportunity."

Fans will have a chance this coming Saturday night to meet the Bears up-close and personal as they'll have a special session along with the Lady Bears at JQH Arena.

"We've got a lot of entertainment and a chance to win some prizes," said Bears sports information director Rick Kindhart. "You'll hear from both coaches and you'll get to see both teams with a controlled 10-minute scrimmage. The coaches will also introduce the players. It'll be kind of like a game-day atmosphere."

Doors open at 5:30 on Saturday with the festivities at JQH Arena starting at 7.
