SPRINGFIELD -- High unemployment rates are forcing many workers in the Ozarks to scramble for temporary work. Those daily jobs have dozens of people lining up at Labor Ready, 1825 Cherry St.

The workers who show up will sometimes only make $25 a day but they say some cash is better than none. They mostly unload trucks and clean up construction sites.

The crowd continues to grow. Available work is diminishing because winter is coming, and fewer companies are hiring.

"I've been working here off and on since 2003," said Ray, a temporary worker. "If you're not a regular here then more than likely you're not getting sent out".
