College Wrap-Up: Evangel, Mizzou, Arkansas lose; Bears winby The Associated Press and Joe Hickman, KY3 News
Dexter McCluster ran for a career-high 123 yards and Jevan Snead threw for a career-high 332, leading Mississippi to a 30-17 victory over Arkansas on Saturday. Rebels coach Houston Nutt beat his former team for the second straight year.
Ole Miss (5-2, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) jumped ahead 17-0 and controlled the line of scrimmage throughout. The Rebels could have won by more if not for three turnovers. Arkansas (3-4, 1-4) pulled to 24-17 in the third quarter when Carlton Salters caught a tipped pass for a 58-yard touchdown, but the Razorbacks couldn't finish the rally and Ole Miss added two field goals in the fourth. Nutt coached Arkansas for 10 seasons before leaving late in 2007. The Rebels immediately hired him.
Evangel fell behind Mid-America Nazarene, the 10th-ranked small college team in the country, 42-7 at the half and went on to a 52-14 loss. The Crusaders fell to 1-6 on the season.
Southwest Baptist saw its four game winning streak come to an end with a 14-10 loss at Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
Missouri S&T won its second straight game after opening the season with six straight losses, edging St. Francis, Indiana 39-37.
In its first trip ever to the Fargodome in North Dakota, the Missouri State Bears came away with their third straight road conference victory, clipping North Dakota St. 21-17. The Bears jumped out to a 14-0 lead behind a 17-yard run by Cody Kirby following a blocked punt and a pass from Kirby to Clay Harbour. The Bison rallied to tie the game at 14-14, but a 57 yard run by Hillcrest product Mikael Cooper-Falls proved to be the deciding score in the Bears victory, as their record improves to 5-3.
Colt McCoy completed his first 11 passes and produced touchdowns on No. 3 Texas' first three drives, helping to put Missouri away early in a 41-7 victory on Saturday night. McCoy matched his season best with three touchdown passes, two of them to Jordan Shipley, while Texas' defense blocked a punt for a score in a nearly flawless first half that produced a 35-7 lead. The Longhorns (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) beat Missouri for the sixth straight time and Blaine Gabbert was held to 84 yards passing and a touchdown before getting pulled late in the third quarter. The Tigers (4-3, 0-3) have opened conference play with three straight losses for the first time since 2002 and by a combined score of 95-36 although the toughest stretch of the season by far is over with Missouri at Colorado (2-5) next week.
