FLEMINGTON, Mo. -- A man died after an accident on Pomme de Terre Lake early Wednesday afternoon. John Smith, 78, of Springfield and Albert Warner, 76, of Springfield were in a 12-foot boat that capsized east of Flemington, a half mile north of Highway PP, on the southern end of the lake in northern Polk County.

The Missouri State Water Patrol says the boaters had stopped to eat lunch when Smith stood up in the boat and it overturned, throwing both men in the water. They were trying to put on life jackets when Smith's life jacket floated away.

Warner told rescuers that they clung to the boat for about 40 minutes until two other men came by in another boat. They towed Warner and Smith to shore but Smith died at the scene. Warner was taken to the hospital in Bolivar in serious condition, suffering from hypothermia.
