Rainstorm could inundate parts of the Ozarks

Rain falling on ground

Flash flooding is likely as a major storm likely dumps more rain on Missouri and Arkansas over the next two days, especially areas east and south of Springfield. People should make plans to protect themselves and their property as the storm front moves in.

Forecasters say 2 to 7 inches of rain could fall in parts of south central Missouri and north central Arkansas through late Friday, with the heaviest rain on a line, in Missouri, from Fort Leonard Wood through Cabool to the state line, and, in Arkansas, from Flippin through Salem, Marshall, Little Rock and Camden.

Drivers on Thursday night and Friday morning should be especially careful. Mel Coleman, chief executive officer of North Arkansas Electric Cooperative, headquartered in Salem, says heavy rainfall could cause power outages.

There is a small tornado risk with storms on Thursday evening and night. At the least, the storms likely will have strong winds that can be just as destructive as tornadoes.
