Jury convicts Mountain Grove woman for 2006 deadly crashby KY3 News
GAINESVILLE, Mo -- A jury found a woman from Mountain Grove guilty of three counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of second-degree assault. The verdict against Britta McGowan came down late Thursday night after a four-day trial.
McGowan was 18 when she crashed head-on into another car near Norwood three years ago. Three of her passengers -- David Allred, Casey Morris, and Debbie Akres -- were ejected and killed. Another of her passengers, Randall Mooneyham, and the driver of the oncoming car, Genevieve Ellis, were seriously injured. Investigators said McGowan was driving more than 80mph, 30mph over the speed limit, along Highway E near Norwood on Aug. 14, 2006, when she lost control. Prosecutors say McGowan had an intermediate driver's license, which required her and all her passengers to wear seatbelts, but none of them were doing so. Ellis was wearing a seatbelt. John Russo, as assistant prosecuting attorney in Ozark County, was appointed a special prosecutor when the Wright County prosecutor recused himself. Circuit Judge John Moody scheduled sentencing for Jan. 6. McGowan could get prison sentences up to seven years on each of the five counts, and Moody has the option of making them consecutive or concurrent. Most PopularMore Good Stuff |
