JOPLIN, Mo. -- The faculty of Missouri Southern State University overwhelmingly approved a vote of no confidence in university president Bruce Speck. The vote on Monday was 140 to 44, with almost 78 percent of the university's faculty voting.
After the vote, the president of Missouri Southern State University's Board of Governors says the board will review the vote before deciding how to resolve the situation.
The no-confidence vote is only symbolic, but faculty senate President Roger Chelf says he hopes it prompts the Board of Governors to take some action.
Tensions between the faculty and Speck began mounting in the spring and summer semesters of 2008, when Speck cut more than $1.3 million from the university's operating budget.
