McDonald County fake cancer case moves to trial court

PINEVILLE, Mo. -- A judge found enough evidence for a trial for a woman charged with soliciting donations even though she was healthy. Investigators say Tammy Young, 42, a former clerk for the McDonald County prosecuting attorney's office, told people that she had cancer and then accepted donations for her treatment.

Associate Circuit Judge John LePage sent Young's case to trial court on Wednesday after a preliminary hearing. She's charged with two counts of stealing.

McDonald County Sheriff Robert Evenson testified that he began investigating Young after reports that she did not have cancer, but accepted $10,000 to cover treatment for the disease. She worked in the prosecutor's office from June 2008 until this summer.

Defense attorney Ross Rhoades argued prosecutors hadn't proven his client didn't believe she had cancer.
