WILLOW SPRINGS, Mo. -- At least two Ozarks families have soldiers stationed at Fort Hood.
Specialists Philip Wiersema and Nathan Cummings, both of Willow Springs, were not involved in the attacks. But both are stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, where at least 12 people were killed and 31are injured after a shooting rampage.
Both Wiersema and Cummings are doing just fine. But Thursday offered a few tense moments for their parents back home when the news broke.
22-year-old Nathan Cummings got back from Iraq in June. His mother, Samia, tells KY3 News that she received a text message from Nathan to assure her he was ok.
She's only been able to speak with Nathan briefly.
In a message via Facebook to Ky3, Nathan wrote, "We were actually about 20 to 30 minutes from getting off work. I think we were all pretty shocked to hear about it. They immediately locked down the whole post, and kept us there until about 8 p.m."
Curtis Wiersema said his son Philip was near the post when the shooting occurred. He hadn't heard anything about it until his son called him at about 3:20 this afternoon.
Philip told him briefly, "some guy went nuts, but I'm ok."
But dad still understandably, has concerns about security on the post.
"I'm glad they got him," Wiersema said of the suspect.
"Especially since this is a doctor that's treating stress related soldiers, combat stress soldiers. For this guy to go nuts, imagine the guys that have been over there," said Wiersema.
