EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. -- The body of a woman was found a day after she disappeared. Police say Carol Thomas, 23, disappeared from Excelsior Springs on Wednesday night. Her body was found in the woods in Ray County on Thursday.

Witnesses say they saw four people beat Thomas and put her in the trunk of a car. Those suspects were being questioned by police on Friday.

"We were optimistic throughout the investigation that we would locate Carol or we would get a call from her and find out that it was not the incident that we believed it to be. We treated it as a full fledged kidnapping from the beginning. We never had any reason to believe that it wasn't legitimate," said Excelsior Springs Police Dept. Lt. Clint Reno.

Investigators were still working to determine where all of the events involved in the case occurred.
