The Drury men's soccer team is on a quest for a national championship. And on Sunday the Panthers, the third ranked team in the nation in the NCAA Division 2, started that journey by capturing the Great Lakes Valley tournament championship with a 1-0 win over Northern Kentucky.
The Norse had been the only team to defeat the 20-1 Panthers during the regular season, and the two squads may very well hook up again in the NCAA Regionals. The league championship was a defensive stalemate until the 78th minute, when Springfield Glendale product Steve Wilczewski scored the only goal of the game. It was Wilczewski's team leading 16th goal of the year, his seventh game winning goal of the season, and the 11th of his career.
With their victory, the Panthers not only won the conference title, but they now have a good chance of hosting the NCAA Regional next Friday and Sunday at Harrison Stadium. The official announcement will come Monday at 6 p.m.
