SPRINGFIELD -- Information on criteria for building walls to reduce highway noise that reaches homes next to U.S. 65 in Springfield will be covered in a public meeting on Thursday. The open house-style meeting will be 3 to 7 at High Street Baptist Church, 900 N. Eastgate Ave. (Park on the south side of the church complex and look for signs directing you to the meeting room.)
In a construction project begun in September and scheduled for completion in the fall of 2011, one lane is being added in each direction on U.S. 65 between U.S. 60 and Interstate 44. That will make U.S. 65 a six-lane highway through Springfield.
A study done in conjunction with the U.S. 65 six-laning project -- as required under federal law when a highway is expanded -- shows where MoDOT is required to offer sound walls. Numerous criteria must be met, and the study shows the criteria have been met in seven locations between U.S. 60 and I-44.
All seven walls will not automatically be built. Property owners adjacent to or others nearby who would benefit from a wall (with a reduction in noise level of at least 5 decibels) will be asked to vote on whether they want a wall. A majority vote of the people affected at each location will decide for that location.
Property owners along U.S. 65, identified in the noise study, have been notified by mail about the process. They will be mailed a ballot in early December.
At the public meeting on Thursday, maps showing the locations that meet sound wall criteria will be displayed and MoDOT engineers will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the issues one-on-one, including advantages and disadvantages of sound walls.
Anyone may attend the public meeting to find out more about sound walls. Also at the meeting, people will be able to give their opinions about the look of the walls if they are built. The walls will have a rock texture, but framing details and stain options are yet to be determined.
