SPRINGFIELD -- The Loren Cook Company received a $511,000 citation for the death of a worker last May at its plant at 2015 E. Dale St. The Occupational and Safety Health Administration says the company let its employees work on dangerous equipment without safeguarding the machinery.
Charles Knapp, 59, of Walnut Grove died on May 13 when a piece of metal was ejected from a machine and hit him in the head.
Loren Cook has 15 business days to respond to the OSHA citation. OSHA often reduces fines after companies appeal citations for workplace accidents or conditions.
Loren Cook makes industrial ventilation equipment. It employs about 800 workers, about 580 in Springfield and the rest in North Carolina.
