Rescue foundation takes in Missouri puppy mill dogs

The Washington Post has a photo essay online on Thursday showing Volunteers with A Forever-Home Rescue Foundation and Homeless Animal Rescue Team taking delivery of 111 dogs from puppy mills in Missouri. The puppies include Shih Tzus, Maltese, Yorkies, English bulldogs and other breeds.

The photos show the volunteers at Greenbriar Shopping Center in Chantilly, Va. The groups are working with the National Mill Dog Rescue organization, which has formed an alliance with puppy mill breeders to pick up "surplus" dogs that would otherwise be destroyed. In exchange, the rescue group agrees not to release the breeders' names or exact location.

"We're not friends; it's just an understanding we have," said Theresa Strader, founder of the all-volunteer, Colorado-based organization.
