SPRINGFIELD -- With the expansion of U.S. 65 to six lanes between Interstate 44 and U.S. 60, the Missouri Department of Transportation is looking at building noise-reducing walls in several locations. MoDOT held an open house at High Street Baptist Church on Thursday afternoon to gather opinions on the walls.

MoDOT was required by federal law to do a study when it decided to expand U.S. 65 to six lanes. That study shows where it’s required to offer sound walls to nearby residents and businesses.

The walls could go up in seven different locations but they won't be built automatically. It will be up to property owners in those areas to vote on whether they want the walls.

The walls would reduce the noise level from the six lanes of traffic by at least five decibels.

The proposed walls would vary from 10 feet to 18 feet hight. The locations include:

west side of 65- BNSF Railroad to Catalpa west side of 65- Bennett to Sunshine west side and some of east side- Sunshine to Battlefield west side and some of east side- Battlefield to Gasconade west side of 65- Republic to US 60
