Hunters bagged 86,202 deer in the first two days of the modern firearms deer season that opened on Saturday. That's down about 12 percent, or about 12,000, compared to a year ago. The November portion of the modern firearms season ends Nov. 24.
Conservation agents say steady rain contributed to a decline in the number of deer killed. Missouri Department of Conservation scientist Lonnie Hansen says the figures on Saturday were slightly better than last year's. He says the big drop-off occurred Sunday, when parts of the state were hit with heavy rain.
A couple of hunters died over the weekend. A man from the St. Louis area was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow hunter in northeast Missouri and a 75-year-old hunter drowned on Sunday trying to driving through high water in Dallas County.
