SPRINGFIELD -- Thousands of dollars in donations from the community came to fruition on Tuesday morning, helping 76 World War 2 veterans see their memorial in our nation's capital. The first trip of the Ozarks Honor Flight left at 7 a.m. from Springfield-Branson National Airport.

The veterans fly free; the guardians and volunteers pay their way. Each Honor Flight from Springfield costs at least $50,000.

It was a busy day for the veterans. By noon, they were at the World War 2 monument in Washington, D.C. Later, they visited the Korean War, Vietnam War, Lincoln and Iwo Jima/Marine memorials. They then went to Arlington National Cemetery, where they observed the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown.

The group landed about 10:45 p.m.
