Ex-worker at Kanakuk Kamps faces additional sex abuse chargesby KY3 News
FORSYTH, Mo. -- A former assistant director at a Christian sports camp in Branson waived his right to a preliminary hearing on sex abuse charges. Some of the boys who say Peter Newman molested them after meeting them at Kanakuk Kamps were prepared to testify at the hearing on Tuesday. Instead, a judge sent the case to trial court after the Taney County prosecuting attorney amended the charges.
The prosecutor dropped two felony charges and added eight more. Investigators believe some of the molestations occurred at the camp on Lake Taneycomo but others occurred at Newman's home in Branson during private Bible study sessions and other places. The original probable cause statement said the victims, who are now men, said the abuse began in 1999 and continued through 2008. The probable cause statement for the newest charges indicate at least two more out-of-state victims say they were abused between 2006 and 2008. Newman, 34, is charged with three counts of first-degree statutory sodomy, three counts of second-degree statutory sodomy and four counts of enticement of a child. If he's convicted, he could get prison sentences of at least five years for each crime. Newman's first appearance in circuit court is scheduled for Dec. 17. He's free on $650,000 bond. If the preliminary hearing had been held, and Newman's accusers would have testified, Associate Circuit Judge Tony Williams would have closed the hearing to spectators to protect their idenities.
