WASHINGTON -- FAA officials say failed computers that delayed flights across the country early Thursday are now working again. The air traffic controllers union says the computer failure involved both of the Federal Aviation Administration's computer centers in Salt Lake City and Atlanta.

Even though the FAA said Thursday the problem had been solved, Doug Church, a spokesman for the National Air Traffic Controllers Union, said controllers were still entering flight plans manually into computers in some locations.

The computers at the two centers, which handle flight plans for
air traffic throughout the country, broke down early Thursday.

In Fort Worth, Texas, American Airlines said several hundred of its flights were delayed around the country due to the computer problem. A spokesman for American says the delays were from a few
minutes to a bit over an hour.

In Atlanta, an AirTran Airways spokesman said there was no danger to flights in the air, and flights were still taking off and landing. Air-Tran cancelled 44 flights in its system by 9 a.m., including two flights at the Branson Airport: Flight 1584 from Atlanta to Branson Flight 1585 from Branson to Atlanta.

The USAToday flight delay Web site put delays into and out of Atlanta at 5 hours as of 8:20 a.m. Another Air Tran flight from Branson to Atlanta was listed as on-time by the airline's Web site.

A Branson Airport spokesman asked people flying on Air Tran to look at the airline's Website before leaving for the airport. Christopher White said flight plans were being entered manually because of a malfunction with the automated system. That's what caused delays and cancellations.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world's busiest airport, was particularly affected.

The Springfield-Branson National Airport spokesman says the local airport did not see widespread delays as of 7:45 a.m. An online search of arrivals and departures at that airport found one flight delayed by 60 minutes: Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight EV 5558 arriving from Atlanta .

The best advice is to call ahead to see if your arrival or departure is on-time.
