SPRINGFIELD -- A man from Springfield is accused of setting a house on fire at 1088 S. Main Ave. on Thursday afternoon. Norman Bennett is charged with first-degree arson.

A brother and sister -- both adults -- were able to make it out of the house safely. The fire destroyed the utility room and garage, and caused major smoke damage to the rest of the house. Fire Marshal Bill Spence say the fire started in a pile of clothes in the utility room.

In a probable charge statement filed with the arson charge, Spence says the residents of the house had an argument with Bennett just before the fire started. The detective says the residents said Bennett left the home just before the residents noticed the fire.

Spence said Bennett confessed to setting the fire in an interview on Friday morning, and his description of how he started the fire matched Spence's findings.
