SPRINGFIELD -- City fire marshals have case files on several unsolved arsons in the past few weeks.
"We had lawn mowers, we had bikes, memorabilia, wedding materials, wedding photos, a lot of valuable stuff,” said Mark Wright, one of the arson victims. Wright is fired up. "Somebody opened up my door, took my gas can and doused it all around and lit it on fire,” he said. He says teens torched the shed in his back yard. His neighbors witnessed the crime. "I had two eyewitnesses who saw a kid jump my fence, then jump back over,” said Wright. Fire Marshal Bill Spence says Wright's case is one that will soon be closed. "The case has been solved and it is in the juvenile court systems,” said Spence. There are six other open cases: one on West Kearney Street, one on West Pacific Street, one on West Olive Street, one on South Regina Avenue, one on East Battlefield Road, and one on South Roanoke Avenue. "Only two of the six fires we have open right now are related to each other, and those were two fires that were burglary-arsons. The others aren't related; they stem from people being mad at each other, or over money,” said Spence. Until every person responsible is behind bars, it's of little solace to Wright. "The only other question for me is how many other fires has this individual been involved with, and my family -- we're fearful. That could've been my house, or it could be my house next,” said Wright. Spence says, until the teen in Wright's case is proven guilty, he is free. Nationally, arson cases have only a 19 percent clearance rate. In Springfield, that rate is 54 percent. Most Popular
