Fayetteville-- It wasn't pretty. But the final outcome is all that matters to a locker room of young Razorbacks. Arkansas held off the Appalachian State Mountaineers 81-72 in overtime.
"We knew we were going to get a tremendous effort," Arkansas Head Coach John Pelphrey said after the game.
The Hogs opened up the game going on a 21-0 run after falling behind four to nothing. They took a 15 point lead into half. That lead didn't last long. The Mountaineers grabbed the lead with less than 10 minutes to go in the second half.
"No defense intensity, but you have to give those guys credit for making shots," said Pelphrey.
The shot of the night came from Appalachian's Josh Hunter. Hunter's 3 with five seconds remaining sent the game into overtime.
The Hogs made sure they were going to win the extra period. They outscored the Mountaineers 13-4.
Pelphrey noticed a different team in the in that five minute period, "I was really proud of our guys in the overtime."
Freshman Marshawn Powell led the Razorbacks with a career high 29 points, adding seven rebounds. Sophomore shooting guard Rotnei Clarke poured in 16 points. Morgan State will visit Bud Walton Arena Tuesday night.
