BRANSON, Mo. -- Andy Williams often jokes before intermission about checking the box office receipts. Prosecutors say someone on the inside was beating him to it for a few years. Dawn Cleveringa is charged with theft and forgery in Taney County.
"She was a long-term very trusted employee," said Pat Keck, an attorney for Moon River Enterprises and '>Andy Williams. Cleveringa's a former book-keeper at Moon River Theater. Keck says she's been there since it opened. A lengthy investigation by Branson police found Cleveringa forged checks to herself. "Mr. Williams is a kind, gentle man who puts a lot stock in the people around him," Keck said. "He put his trust in her, and this saddens him." It also saddens fans who were buying tickets at Moon River Theatre on Monday. Many feel like Williams is part of their extended family. "Very sad to hear that," Williams fan Susan Wojcik said. "He probably would have given it to her if he knew she needed help; I bet he would have." The investigation alleges embezzlement. Since 2006, police say Cleveringa wrote checks to herself totaling more than $680,000. "Seems unusual it would be discovered after so long a period of time," Williams fan Bill Britton said. "Just unbelievable." Despite this recent news, an alleged Grinch hasn't stolen Christmas. "Mr. Williams is still filled with the Christmas spirit," Keck said. "I think the feelings go deeper," Wojcik said. "That's the worst part of it, not the money." Keck says these allegations will in no way change Williams' scheduled performances in Branson.
