Community groups leader Lloyd Young dies in Springfieldby KY3 News
SPRINGFIELD -- Lloyd Young, a longtime community volunteer, died Sunday at age 79 after a long illness. Young was a retired professor of sociology at Missouri State University.
Young chaired the Good Community Committee, which strived to bring together multiple organizations to find solutions to problems in the city. He was a director of the MSU Community and Social Issues Institute and a past president of the Springfield (Downtown) Rotary Club. In the past year, he served on the citizens task force that examined the Springfield police officers-firefighters pension fund and recommended a ¾-percent sales tax be submitted to voters in November. Brian Fogle, executive vice president of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, said Young passed away peacefully with his wife and two children at his side. His daughter said some of his final conversation was about how three non-profit groups needed to work better together, and how the community needed to resolve funding for them to be sustainable. “He labored to make Springfield a Good Community until the very end. Our community is a better place because of Lloyd, and he worked tirelessly on our behalf because he thought it was the proper thing to do,” said Fogle. A memorial service is being planned for next month. Gorman-Scharpf will handle funeral arrangements. Most PopularMore Good StuffAdvertisement
