SPRINGFIELD -- A record number of more than 6,000 runners and walkers continued a tradition by participating in the 15th annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk in downtown. Attendance records have been broken over the past few years. There were 3,400 participants in 2006; 4,246 in 2007; and just more than 5,000 in 2008.

The Springfield Turkey Trot is the largest Thanksgiving Day 5K race in Missouri, and is the largest annual race of any kind in the Springfield metro area.

Awards were presented to the overall winners, with the top three racers in each of 14 age groups receiving prizes. The best overall female runner was Courtney Waltbillig, 21, of Rogersville, with a finish time of 18:13. The best overall male runner was Aki Nummela, 24, of Joplin, with a finish time of 15:17.

The best overall female masters runner (40 years of age and older) was Anna Assenmacher, 41, of Springfield, with a finish time of 20:10. The best overall male masters runner was Brian Schmidt, 40, of Sachse, Texas, with a finish time of 16:55.

This race this year had participants from at least 26 states and four other countries.

All proceeds benefit the Developmental Center of the Ozarks and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board Scholarship Fund. Participants also were asked to bring three canned food items for the Ozark Food Harvest. More than 4,400 pounds of food was donated in 2008.
