Cassville's football program did not have a long history of success until 2008. Before that, the Wildcats had only been to the post-season three times with only a single playoff victory.
But last season Cassville became the first second place district finisher to win a state title. And on Saturday night the Wildcats won their second consecutive state crown with a 24-7 victory over Bowling Green.
It didn't look good early on as the Bobcats from Eastern Missouri scored on their opening possession and were well on their way to a 14-0 lead until Cassville intercepted a Bowling Green pass in the end zone.
From there, the momentum took a big swing in Cassville's direction when Joseph Gouvion broke free on an 85-yard touchdown run, and the Wildcats would follow that up with a double-reverse 63 yard pass by Trevor Tanner to set up a go-ahead touchdown on a Tanner keeper from a yard out.
In the third quarter Tanner scored on a 36 yard keeper, and a 38 yard field goal by Matt Angel topped off a 24-7 victory that seemed far from likely when previously unbeaten Bowling Green was up 7-0.
