JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- A 15-year-old girl pleaded not guilty for the stabbing, cutting and strangling death of a neighbor girl. An attorney for Alyssa Bustamante entered a not guilty plea on her behalf on Tuesday to first-degree murder and armed criminal action for the killing of 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten on Oct. 21. Bustamante sat silently, often looking down, during a court hearing that lasted less than one minute.

Sheriff's deputies say Bustamante dug two holes before Elizabeth's death and later led them to her body. Both girls lived in St. Martins, just west of Jefferson City.

Detectives say Bustamante told them she wanted to know what it was like to kill someone. A judge certified her last month to stand trial as an adult and entered a plea of not guilty for her because she had no lawyer. The hearing on Tuesday in Cole County Circuit Court was to let Bustamante enter a plea with an attorney present, although defendants in the United States are presumed to be not guilty until they are convicted or plead guilty.
