Last week, the Nixa girls basketball team won a tournament in Ozark by beating the host team, their neighborhood rival that usually gives them all they can handle. This weekend, they won a tournament at Kickapoo in Springfield by beating the host team, a perennial powerhouse program that could have very well won the state title themselves last year had they not lost to the Lady Eagles by one point.

Yes, the Nixa Lady Eagles, the defending state champs in Class 5, may have lost some key players from last year's squad. But, so far, they've taken on a number of great teams this season and come out spotless at 7-0.

The latest victory came at the Kickapoo tournament on Saturday where the two teams met for the first time since Nixa's exciting 57-56 victory in last year's district playoff final that many people considered the state championship game unto itself, as Kickapoo wound up as the second ranked team in the state behind Nixa at number one.

This time, however, the game wasn't as close. With both teams featuring a number of new players, Nixa got out to a quick lead and never looked back, winning 49-38 behind the 18 points of returning guard and leader Beckie Funderburke.

McKenzie Smith had 21 points for Kickapoo, but she could not keep the Lady Chiefs from suffering their second loss of the season.
