JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Missouri's fire marshal reminds people to use caution with candles as they gather to celebrate the holidays. The U.S. Fire Administration says December is the peak time of year for fires caused by home candles. The National Fire Protection Association says the top four days for candle fires are around Christmas and New Year's.

Missouri Fire Marshal Randy Cole says people should not use real candles as part of their holiday decorations and should exercise basic safety when using candles throughout their homes. He also says people should never leave a lighted Christmas tree unattended.
