SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Texting while trucking is the latest dangerous driving behavior under attack. Federal guidelines approved in January now prohibit drivers of commercial vehicles from texting while behind the wheel. It may sound like common sense but it came too late for one mother from Springfield.
At 55mph, a texting driver is traveling the length of a football field, including end zones, without looking at the road. It was enough to convince the U.S. Department of Transportation to outlaw the practice in big rigs. It's not enough to bring back Cole Winebrinner, who was killed by a texting trucker just four months ago. “I scream in anger at texting. I scream, I hate it!” said Cole’s mother, Trish Foster. Barely able to compose herself during an interview, Foster knows her message is clear. “It shouldn't have happened. It should not have happened.” Winebrinner, 38, was in the sleeper of his big rig last September. His partner was behind the wheel. The driver received a text at 5:09. Police say he got distracted, veered off the road and drove over a bridge. “The driver received a text at 5:09. By 5:13, both boys are gone,” said Foster. Winebrinner left behind his mother and 9-year-old daughter, Holly. “I'm not angry at the boy or the family or the person who texted. I'm angry at technology that's being used as a weapon to kill people.” The U.S. Department of Transportation is responding to accidents like Winebrinner's by outlawing texting while trucking. Drivers of all commercial vehicles caught texting face civil and criminal penalties of up to $2,750. For Foster, it's not enough. She wants the practice outlawed for everyone. She doesn't want you to feel sorry for her. She just wants you to put down the phone. “How do you live with a piece of your heart missing? How do you live?” Most Viewed
