ROSATI, Mo. -- A man from Oklahoma fired at a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper and two Crawford County sheriff's deputies after a chase on Interstate 44 about 11 a.m. Tuesday between Cuba and St. James. Officers returned fire, fatally wounding him.

The shooting was near the 200 mile marker, about four miles east of St. James near the Phelps/Crawford county line. The driver pulled over on the shoulder after three of his four tires were punctured by a spike strip.

Troopers say the man got of the pickup, which wasn't his, pulled out a gun, pointed it at himself, and then pointed and fired at the troopers and deputy. After he was hit by the return fire, an ambulance took the man to the hospital in Rolla but doctors couldn't save him.

The Highway Patrol says the motorist was 26 years old. They say the U.S. Secret Service contacted the Cuba Police Department and said the man might be in the area, and asked it to arrest the man on a warrant from Texas. Crawford County Sheriff Randy Martin said he didn't know the reason for the warrant, but he said the Secret Service warned Cuba police that the man could be armed and dangerous.

Cuba police officers and Crawford County sheriff's deputies went to arrest the man at a business in Cuba, and he sped away in the pickup, dragging a Cuba officer for a short distance. That led to the chase that preceded the shooting.

The three officers who shot at the wanted man are on administrative leave, a routine procedure after law officers use deadly force and harm or kill someone.
