SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Two men are in custody after a home invasion on Wednesday night in which a man in the home shot and wounded at least one of two masked invaders. City police say two men broke into a home in the 1300 block of East Calhoun Street near Rogers Avenue about 11 p.m. Police say one man was armed with a large knife.
Police say the man in the house, who was watching his 2-month-old grandchild, heard some rustling at the back door and grabbed his gun. The invaders then went around to the front door and broke in. “Two individuals came in through a locked door,” said Maj. Kevin Routh. “The victim fired a few rounds at the suspects. The first ran through the house and jumped through a back window. The other spun and went out the way he came in."
“I was up all night,” said neighbor Ivan Murphy. Murphy and his wife, Sue, have never experienced anything like what happened just two doors away at 11 Wednesday night. “We heard three shots,” he said. “I told Sue, ‘Get down; we don't need to get hit by a stray bullet.’” Less than an hour after the invasion, officers responded to a man with a gunshot wound in the 900 block of North Homewood Avenue, about four miles away from the invasion. Police believe he's one of the home invaders and took him into custody after he was out of surgery. They arrested a second man later. Police found some large knives along with other evidence at the home. They're continuing to investigate. No charges were filed by Thursday afternoon. "At this point of the investigation," Maj. Routh said, "we have no reason to believe the suspects and victim (knew each other)." Maj. Routh said there are two others who live in the home. Police are investigating any possible connections with them. The man who fired the shots told KY3, he's only been in the home for ten days; he's from Florida. The man also told KY3 he knows he struck one man square in the middle of his chest with his .357 and grazed the other. He said he's sorry for having hit the men. Police tell KY3 the suspect taken to the hospital had a gunshot wound to his side. The man in the home believes there's more people on the loose since the injured man at the hospital didn't have a gunshot wound to his chest. He also thinks there might have been someone in a getaway vehicle. He believes a white minivan was waiting for the intruders. Most Viewed
