SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Investigators are looking at surveillance video of a man in the middle of a crime spree.

Greene County Sheriff's Department detectives want people to get a good look at the man who wascaught on camera trying to break into a business just north of Springfield. He may be responsible for more than dozen burglaries on the same night.

Security cameras were rolling at 3:20 a.m. on Feb. 27 when a car pulled up to the front door. A man in dark clothing knew he had to act fast. What he did shocked the store owner.

"Just, wow. I didn't think the guy was a novice when I saw it," said Samantha Rushing, tanning salon owner. "He really knew what he was doing and went at that door."

The video shows the burglar going up to the glass and fiercely swinging at it with something. For nearly a minute, the determined thief hit and even kicked the door but couldn't get a clean break. That's because the glass doesn't shatter; it's laminated.

It was a security move that the owners made since it opened. Rushing asked us not to identify her business since it's been a frequent target of burglars.

"Before, they just threw rocks and cracked it, but this guy really left a hole," said Rushing.

Now she hopes images caught on camera will help detectives arrest the man who may be to blame for several recent burglaries.

The business also had stickers on the front door, showing it was under 24-hour video surveillance. The stickers may be what made the crook think twice. In the video, the man appeared to look right at the security warnings, and possibly saw the camera right in front of him. He ended up leaving empty handed but still left a big mess to clean up in the morning.

"I'm just disgusted that people do this. It's a small business. You're not going to get much anyways. I don't understand why they do it," said Rushing.
