SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A group of students from Boston University is spending its spring break helping people in the Ozarks. They've traveled 1,400 miles as part of a program called "Alternative Spring Break."

These students are volunteering with Champion Athletes of the Ozarks, a program that teaches sports and life skills to people with disabilities. The volunteers and athletes take the field to not only compete but also to learn a life lesson.

"It's hard for us as much as for them to interact with each other. It's definitely a learning experience," said Tiffani Burks.

"I'm getting to hang out with these awesome champions," said Michaela Lacy.

"Alternative Spring Break" began began 22 years ago. More than 300 volunteers are working in 35 communities across the country this year. For most of the college students, this isn't their first volunteer experience.

"I really enjoy giving back. All throughout high school I volunteered for the food pantry; I volunteer at local daycare centers and I really feel that it makes a community," said Burks.
