SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Police say a Hillcrest High School student who was shot Sunday has died.

Lt. David Millsap says Kody Ray, 17, was shot in the doorway of his home at 716 W. Chicago around 5:35 p.m. Sunday. There were five, 5-year-olds at the home at the time of the shooting. None of them were hurt or witnessed the shooting.

Police say Ray and the suspected shooter knew each other.

Ray moved to Springfield in April 2009 from New York. Family friends in Sidney, N.Y., say he was getting a fresh start living with his father.

Members of the Hillcrest High School community told KY3, they believe this shooting was related to an incident at school. Numerous people say, Kody might have been killed as a result of some students getting suspended and expelled from a planned-fight that was video recorded.

The Springfield School District won't comment on discipline regarding students. Springfield Police is familiar with many leads on this story, including a fight, and is following them up.

Hillcrest High School is closed this week because of spring break. A counselor will be at the school from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to provide support to grieving students.

Police are asking that anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact the Springfield Police Department at 864-1810.
